China Appoints 'Hardliner' Zheng Yanxiong as Head of Hong Kong Liaison Office
Concurrent Advisor to Hong Kong National Security Office
China's State Council announced on the 14th that it has appointed Zheng Yanxiong (59), classified as a 'hardliner,' as the new director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Lian Ban).
The Hong Lian Ban is responsible for gathering opinions from various sectors of Hong Kong society regarding the central government of China through contacts and acting on other affairs carried out by the central government of China.
Zheng Yanxiong has served as the director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, established by the central government to strengthen control over Hong Kong, since July 2020. In 2011, when he was the Party Secretary of Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, he harshly suppressed the Wukan village protesters demanding compensation for land requisition. Along with his role as director of the Hong Lian Ban, he also concurrently serves as an advisor to the National Security Committee of Hong Kong on national security affairs.

The Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) cited sources on the same day, reporting that "Zheng Yanxiong's appointment shows that the Chinese government continues to maintain a clear red line regarding Hong Kong's national security."
