Spokesperson Wang criticized, "The US and Japan claim to protect a free and open Indo-Pacific region in words, but in reality, they organize various closed and exclusive small groups, creating division and confrontation."
Wang added, "We urge the United States and Japan to abandon Cold War thinking and ideological prejudice, stop creating imaginary enemies and bringing new Cold War thinking into the Asia-Pacific region, and not to become the source of backlash that disrupts stability in the Asia-Pacific."
In the 2+2 joint statement, the US and Japan defined China as "the greatest strategic challenge in the Indo-Pacific and beyond," and targeting concerns over a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, emphasized, "We will oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force anywhere in the world."
Chinese state media also sought to check the strengthening of the US-Japan alliance following this 2+2 meeting. On the same day, the Global Times, affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper People's Daily, reported on the US-Japan 2+2 meeting and analyzed that the military alliance between Japan and the United States is becoming closer.
