An elderly man who worked as a cashier at Walmart in the United States was able to enjoy a happy retirement thanks to an online fundraising campaign.
According to local U.S. broadcaster KFYR and other foreign media on the 12th (local time), Warren Marion (82) worked at the checkout counter at Walmart in Cumberland, Maryland, for 40 hours a week to make a living.
Marion, a Navy veteran, worked at the automobile company GM (General Motors) in his youth but lived alone after losing his wife. It was reported that he had been working at Walmart for several years due to insufficient retirement funds.
Meanwhile, Lori Magati, who has about 280,000 followers on TikTok, extended a helping hand. Laura Magati runs a pest control company called 'Bug Voice.'
She happened to stop by Walmart and was surprised to see the elderly Marion working as a cashier. Magati posted a video of Marion working at the checkout on TikTok, writing, "An 82-year-old man is still working 8 to 9-hour shifts," and asked, "Is there anyone who can help this elderly man retire?"
Magati also posted Marion's story on the crowdfunding site GoFundMe and started raising funds. She requested help, saying, "Please free him from standing for 8 hours and help him visit his family living in Florida."
Magati initially set the fundraising goal at $100,000 (about 123 million KRW), but more than 5,700 donors quickly contributed. She raised over $140,000 (173 million KRW) and delivered it to Marion.

Marion expressed gratitude to those who helped him, saying, "How could I be this lucky?" In an interview with local media, he said, "I paid off all my debts, including my mortgage," and added, "Now I can go to Florida anytime I want to see my daughter and grandchildren."
