US Wind Power Plant Industrial Battery Supply... "Exports Surge"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] LS Cable & System is accelerating the expansion of new businesses together with its subsidiary LS Mtron.
LS Mtron is a specialized company in ultra capacitor (UC) solutions that started research and development within LS Cable & System in 2002 and has built technological capabilities over 20 years. Exports of UCs for U.S. wind power plants have surged, growing at an average annual rate of over 30%.
UC is an industrial special battery. It has fast charge and discharge speeds and a long lifespan. It is mainly used in wind turbines, UPS (uninterruptible power supply), factory automation, automated guided vehicles (AGV), and electric vehicles.
LS Cable & System explained that it is increasing investment, judging that the market could expand to a scale of trillions of won if UC is widely adopted as an electric vehicle component. It is analyzed that it can be widely used as emergency power and output support devices.
UC delivers high output at the moment power is about to be cut off, connecting the power supply. The charge and discharge time is about one-tenth that of lead-acid batteries, which are currently mainly used. The number of charge and discharge cycles is more than 1,000 times that of lead-acid batteries.
Batteries for wind turbines are generally replaced every 2 to 3 years. Applying UC can extend usage to over 15 years.
Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Mtron, said, "The market is rapidly growing due to the expansion of application fields and the spread of electric vehicles and the wind power industry," adding, "UC can complement the shortcomings of standard secondary batteries, so its application fields are limitless."
LS Cable & System is also developing a hybrid ESS (H-ESS, Hybrid Energy Storage System) for electric vehicle charging with LS Mtron. This product uses capacitors instead of batteries to enhance power supply stability and reduce fire risk.

H-ESS enables stable power supply even during peak power times when multiple electric vehicles are charged simultaneously at charging stations. Its performance degrades less even after repeated charge and discharge cycles. Its lifespan is 5 to 10 times that of general ESS.
