[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] Lydia Ko (25), a New Zealand Korean golfer ranked number one in the world, married Jung Joon (27), the son of Jung Tae-young, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Card, on the 30th at Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul. It was reported in June that the couple, who have been dating since last year, would have a year-end wedding.
Lydia Ko, who turned professional in 2013, has won 19 times on the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, including major championships such as the 2015 Evian Championship and the 2016 ANA Inspiration (now Chevron Championship). In the recently concluded 2022 LPGA Tour, she won three times including the final CME Group Tour Championship, sweeping major categories such as prize money ($4,364,403), Player of the Year, and scoring average. At the end of last month, she returned to the world number one ranking for the first time in five years and five months.
Born in Korea, Lydia Ko emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 2003. She won a silver medal for New Zealand at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
Jung Joon, her husband, graduated from Claremont McKenna College in California, USA, and has been working at a Hyundai Motor Group affiliate in San Francisco since this year. When Lydia Ko won the season finale CME Group Tour Championship, Jung Joon visited the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, where the tournament was held, to cheer her on and share in her victory.
Jung Tae-young, Vice Chairman and father of Jung Joon, is the eldest son of the late Jung Kyung-jin, founder of Jongno Academy, and the second son-in-law of Chung Mong-koo, Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group. He has served as Vice President of Hyundai Card, CEO of Hyundai Card, Hyundai Capital, and Hyundai Commercial, and was promoted to Vice Chairman in 2015.
