Illegal Operations Rampant Among Sangjo Companies... Fair Trade Commission Issues Consumer Damage Advisory
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunju Lee] The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a 'Consumer Damage Advisory' regarding funeral service companies. It has been determined that illegal business practices are increasing, such as some funeral service companies illegally obtaining consumer personal information from closed companies to induce new memberships.
On the 29th, the FTC issued a consumer damage advisory, warning of secondary damage due to illegal activities related to closed funeral service companies. Recently, some funeral service companies have been randomly contacting consumers of closed funeral service companies to induce them to join other products they offer.
One company was found to provide false information claiming that it had acquired members from a closed company, or deceive consumers by saying that contracts were transferred due to mergers with existing companies, causing compensation payments to be made to another funeral service company. There were also cases where companies randomly contacted consumers of closed funeral service companies, impersonating themselves as participants in the Naesangjo Geudaero program, and induced them to join other products they offer. Naesangjo Geudaero is a service guarantee system that allows consumers of closed funeral service companies to continue using similar funeral services without additional charges.
The FTC stated, "Participants in the Naesangjo Geudaero program do not engage in sales activities that contact affected consumers in advance," and advised, "Consumers should carefully check the status of the funeral service company they joined through the FTC or the Naesangjo website." They also urged, "Be especially cautious as joining products from financially unstable companies through illegal sales activities may result in inadequate advance payment protection, causing repeated damages."
