Selected as one of 44 full members as a transportation engineering expert
Contributions to establishing metropolitan transportation network vision and policy development
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Choi Kiju, President of Ajou University, has been selected as a new regular member of the Korean Academy of Engineering in 2023. The Korean Academy of Engineering annually selects new members who have contributed to technological advancement in universities, companies, and research institutes.
The Korean Academy of Engineering announced on the 27th that 25 academics and 19 industry professionals were selected as new regular members for 2023. Academy members are divided into regular members, general members, senior members, and foreign members. Regular members are selected from among the general members.
The evaluation process takes 10 months, including candidate discovery and recommendation, a four-stage achievement review, and a written vote by all regular members. Including the newly selected members this time, there are a total of 285 regular members. There are 153 from academia and 132 from industry. Regular members are promoted to senior members after evaluation at age 65.
President Choi Kiju was selected as a regular member in the field of construction and environmental engineering. Recognized as an expert proficient in both research and practice in the field of public transportation, President Choi was acknowledged for establishing and announcing the Metropolitan Transportation 2030 vision and for developing and implementing various metropolitan transportation policies.
President Choi graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering (Urban Engineering major) at Seoul National University College of Engineering and earned a master's degree in transportation engineering from the same university's graduate school. He then received a Ph.D. in transportation planning from the University of Illinois, USA. From 1992, he served as a senior researcher in the Urban Transportation Research Division at the Seoul Institute, and since 1994, he has been a professor in the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering at Ajou University.

Based on his expertise in transportation engineering, he has devoted himself to education and research and has actively made policy recommendations on transportation. He has actively participated in advisory activities for various institutions and local governments. Over the years, he has served as ▲Evaluation Committee Member for Fiscal Projects at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance ▲Deliberation Committee Member of the Central Urban Planning Committee at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport ▲Chairman of the Bus Industry Development Council at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport ▲Chairman of the Korean Committee of the World Road Association ▲President of the Korean Society of Transportation. In 2019, he served as the inaugural chairman (vice-ministerial level) of the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, laying the foundation for the organization.
