Handonghun on Lee Jaemyung's Prosecution Criticism: "Just Respond Like Other Citizens... That's the Law"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon responded to Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, describing the prosecution investigation as "oppression of the opposition party," saying, "Like other citizens, you should respond within this country's judicial system, and that is what the law requires."
According to the legal community on the 25th, Minister Han emphasized this during a meeting with reporters immediately after the National Assembly plenary session was adjourned the previous morning, stating, "It is common for politicians under investigation to make excessive and exaggerated remarks."
Regarding speculation that Lee would not comply with the summons, he reiterated, "It is an issue that should be handled within the judicial system just like any other citizen."
Earlier, on the 22nd, Minister Han attended the opening ceremony of the new building of the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office Sokcho Branch and told reporters, "As you know well, the prosecution is investigating collusion corruption between officials of Seongnam City, a local government, and real estate developers," adding, "It is a routine investigation into local government corruption, and I believe the prosecution will conduct a fair investigation according to procedures."
On the 23rd, at an on-site Supreme Council meeting held in Gangwon, Lee characterized the recent prosecution investigation as "Yoon Seok-youl administration's rogue sword dance," criticizing it as "oppression and destruction of the opposition party, a plot to eliminate political rivals." The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office Seongnam Branch notified Lee to appear for questioning on the morning of the 28th regarding the 'Seongnam FC sponsorship fund suspicion.' Lee is reported to plan not to comply with the summons due to a scheduled event in Gwangju on the same day.
