Bucheon City Requests Cooperation for Restoration of 3 Districts and Conversion to General Neighborhoods at Gyeonggi-do Mayors and Governors Council
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] On the 22nd, Jo Yong-ik, Mayor of Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province, requested the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to promptly process the "approval application for the restoration of Bucheon City's three districts (gu) and conversion to general neighborhoods (dong)" at the first regular meeting of the 8th term of the Gyeonggi Province Mayors and Governors Association held in Seongnam. He also asked the city and county heads attending the meeting for active interest and support.
Bucheon City, following the government's policy direction to streamline administrative organizations, abolished districts nationwide for the first time in 2016 and introduced the 'Metropolitan Neighborhood System' in 2019, operating 36 neighborhoods as 10 metropolitan units through a responsibility neighborhood system.
However, several issues such as decreased administrative accessibility, damage to local communities, and difficulties in identifying welfare blind spots emerged.
Accordingly, the city is promoting a new administrative system reform by abolishing the metropolitan neighborhoods and restoring districts and converting to general neighborhoods, forming a practical task force (TF) and a public-private council. The Bucheon City Council also adopted a "Resolution urging approval for district restoration and conversion to general neighborhoods" with all 27 city council members from both ruling and opposition parties on the 21st of last month.

Jo Yong-ik, Mayor of Bucheon City, who was elected as vice president of the Gyeonggi Province Mayors and Governors Association, said, "I will work hard for local decentralization by collaborating with mayors and governors in the Gyeonggi area to efficiently resolve major regional issues." He added, "In particular, to quickly resolve the inconveniences caused to Bucheon citizens by the metropolitan neighborhood system, I hope that city and county heads will show active interest and support so that the district restoration and general neighborhood conversion system can be implemented promptly."
