Zelensky at US Congress: "We Will Never Surrender... Aid Is an Investment in Global Security" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who made a surprise visit to the United States, visited the U.S. Congress on the 21st (local time) and stated, "Ukraine is holding the front line and will never surrender." He said, "U.S. aid is not charity. It is an investment in global security and democracy," while requesting additional support and urging sanctions against Russia.
Wearing 'wartime attire' such as an olive-colored sweater and cargo pants, President Zelensky appeared at the Capitol in the afternoon for his speech, where attendees welcomed him with applause. Some waved Ukrainian flags. First, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Americans who have supported Ukraine since Russia's invasion and to "all those who cherish freedom and justice." He said, "Despite all adversity, destruction, and gloom, Ukraine has not fallen. Ukraine is alive and kicking."
He raised his voice, saying, "We have defeated Russia in the battle for the hearts of the world. We have no fear." He also stated, "Russia's tactics are primitive. They burn everything they see," and confirmed, "Ukraine is fighting for independence and freedom. We will never surrender."
President Zelensky also emphasized that although the Ukrainian military has been defending the homeland for over 300 days, more weapons are needed for victory. He said, "We are grateful to have artillery," but added, "Is it enough? Honestly, no."
In particular, Zelensky stressed, "Your money is not charity," and "It is an investment in global security and democracy, which we handle in the most responsible way." This statement is interpreted as a response to recent opposition to aid for Ukraine, mainly from U.S. Republicans, such as "We cannot write a blank check (Kevin McCarthy)." He also added, "Iran's deadly drones have threatened our critical infrastructure. If we do not stop them, it is only a matter of time before they attack other allies." This explains that U.S. support benefits not only Ukraine but also other allied countries. During his speech, he repeatedly used the word 'bipartisan.'
Along with this, President Zelensky urged U.S. Congress members to strengthen sanctions against Russia, saying, "Let the terrorists be held accountable for the invasion." He argued, "Restoring the world order is our shared task," and "Everyone who started this unjust invasion must face justice."
He also confirmed that in the summit meeting with President Joe Biden held before the congressional speech, they discussed a peace proposal including 10 items for joint security. He said, "I am pleased to share that President Biden supported our peace initiative."
Visiting the U.S. ahead of the year-end, President Zelensky said that Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas this year despite the brutal war. He began by saying, "Candles might be lit at Christmas. Not because it is romantic, but because the electricity is out," and "Millions will be without heating or water." However, he emphasized, "We do not complain. We do not judge whose life is easier," and "We Ukrainians will navigate the war for independence and freedom with dignity and success."
He added, "Even without electricity, the light of faith will not go out," and "If Russia attacks us with Iranian drones and our people have to go to bomb shelters on Christmas Eve, we Ukrainians will sit at the table and support each other." He stressed, "I know millions of Ukrainians all wish for the same thing," and "Victory, only victory."
During his speech, President Zelensky mentioned the Battle of Saratoga, a turning point in the American War of Independence, and quoted Franklin Roosevelt's speech. He said, "The righteous American people will achieve complete victory," and raised his voice, "The Ukrainian people will also win. Completely."
Additionally, as a token of gratitude, he presented a flag signed by Ukrainian soldiers to the U.S. Congress. When Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unfolded the Ukrainian flag, standing ovations erupted throughout. The writings on the flag were confirmed to have been made by Ukrainian soldiers in Bakhmut, which Zelensky had visited the day before. During his speech, Zelensky also mentioned Bakhmut, saying, "That land is soaked to the corners with blood, but Bakhmut stands." Speaker Pelosi returned the gesture by presenting the U.S. flag to President Zelensky.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky's visit to the U.S. came 300 days after Russia invaded Ukraine. This is the first time since the war began that Zelensky has left the battlefield to visit a foreign country. That afternoon, he held a summit with President Biden at the White House to discuss measures in response to the prolonged Ukraine war.
