Jeonnam Province Requests Review and Decision on 100 Victims of the Yeosun Incident
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Province Yeosun Incident Task Force has decided to request review and decision on 100 victims.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 21st, the Yeosu Suncheon October 19 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Task Force (Chairman: Governor of Jeonnam Province) held its 4th task force meeting and completed the review of 100 victims.
In 2023, the province plans to focus on increasing the reporting rate through extending the reporting period and tracing victims, as well as fact-checking the reported cases.
The 100 cases that passed the task force review include 53 cases with public evidence such as those investigated by the 1st Truth and Reconciliation Commission and 47 cases with guarantor certificates attached.
Individual review opinion reports will be prepared and submitted to the Yeosun Incident Committee (Chairman: Prime Minister) to request review and decision on victims and their bereaved families.
Among the 367 cases requested for review and decision by the task force to the Yeosun Incident Committee so far, 45 people have been recognized as victims by the committee, and about 110 more are expected to be decided by the end of December.
The task force plans to actively promote reporting and reception during the remaining reporting period by reviewing various measures to increase the reporting rate, such as supporting on-site Yeosun Incident report reception and encouraging reporting of unreported victims identified during fact-finding investigations, so that not a single victim is omitted.
Moon Geumju, Deputy Governor of Jeonnam Province, said, “We will actively cooperate with related organizations to extend the reporting period,” and urged, “We hope bereaved families who have not yet reported will not be afraid and come forward to restore the honor of the victims.”
He added, “Considering that the bereaved families are elderly, from next year we will strive to restore the honor of those innocently sacrificed as soon as possible through faster fact-finding investigations.”
Meanwhile, the damage and reporting deadline is until January 20, 2023, and as of the 20th, a total of 4,627 cases have been received.
