On the 21st (local time), American media outlets including NBC and The Washington Post (WP) reported that on the 15th, a human heart was found at a salt farm operated by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in McEwen, located 60 km southwest of Nashville, Tennessee.
According to reports, the initial reporters, salt farm workers, first thought the object buried in a pile of salt was a rock, but noticing its unusual shape, they alerted the police.
The heart was transported to the Tennessee medical examiner's office, and histological examination confirmed it was the heart of an adult male.
The heart was buried in salt and is said to be completely dehydrated. Authorities stated that it is unclear how long it has been buried.
The Tennessee investigative authorities issued a statement on the 18th saying, "We will conduct additional DNA tests to identify the owner of the heart and will continue active investigations."
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said, "This is one of the five most bizarre cases I have seen in my 32 years in law enforcement," adding, "We will do our best for the owner of the heart and their family."
The salt farm where the heart was found is currently being treated as a crime scene. Police have reportedly begun searching other salt piles within the farm as part of the investigation.
