On the 15th, Mayor Lee Jang-woo held a briefing at Daejeon City Hall to announce the plan for creating a forest recreation complex within the Bomunsan area.
According to Mayor Lee, the plan involves investing a total budget of 189.5 billion KRW from next year through 2027 to establish a forest recreation complex covering 1.96 million pyeong (646 hectares) in the Bomunsan area.
In addition to the existing Healing Forest and others (460,000 pyeong · 151 hectares), new facilities will be developed including the Mokdal-dong Natural Recreation Forest (970,000 pyeong · 319 hectares), Musu-dong Natural Recreation Forest (90,000 pyeong · 30 hectares), and Daejeon Second Arboretum (440,000 pyeong · 146 hectares).
Among these, the Mokdal-dong Natural Recreation Forest will focus on forest experience facilities tailored to life stages from fetus to old age, while the Musu-dong Natural Recreation Forest will be developed as a forest recreation facility offering rest and accommodation, linked with Root Park and O-World.
The Second Arboretum will be composed of specialized exhibition gardens, propagation and exhibition greenhouses, seed storage, research labs, nurseries, and ecological observation trails, operating as a natural arboretum utilizing the forest resources and ecological forest of Bomunsan.
In particular, once the Second Arboretum is established, it will be possible to connect with the nearby Musu-dong Healing Forest and O-World, enabling the creation of a 1 million pyeong scale Bomunsan Healing Forest.
Mayor Lee plans to cover the necessary funding for the forest recreation complex by expanding the green fund for park and green space development and by discovering and participating in national government-funded projects from the Korea Forest Service, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and others.
Mayor Lee explained, “Bomunsan is one of Daejeon’s eight scenic spots, boasting natural landscapes and excellent forest resources. The background of this project is not merely to preserve and manage the forest but to fully return the tangible and intangible value of the forest to the citizens.”
He emphasized, “The large-scale forest recreation complex in the Bomunsan area will transform Daejeon into the premier forest welfare and recreation hub in the central region. Bomunsan will establish itself as a space where eras and generations communicate through the forest, making Daejeon a city that tourists want to stay in longer.”
