North Korea Conducts Artillery Fire in East Coast Buffer Zone (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] It has been confirmed that North Korea is conducting artillery firing training within the Northern Limit Line (NLL) maritime buffer zone in the East Sea. This is a violation of the September 19 military agreement following yesterday's artillery firing.
According to military authorities on the 6th, South Korea and the United States conducted a second day of Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) training at Damteo Base in Samyul-ri, Cheorwon, this morning. The military had announced that 24 MLRS rockets would be fired during the artillery training on this day.
In response to this training, North Korea carried out artillery firing at sea for the second consecutive day. The impact points are reported to be within the maritime buffer zone, raising concerns that this again violates the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement.
Regarding this, a spokesperson for the North Korean General Staff said on the same day, "Following yesterday (the 5th), around 9:15 a.m. today, there were circumstances where the enemy again fired multiple rocket launchers and howitzers near the frontline," and "The General Staff (omitted) issued orders to immediately conduct live-fire artillery shooting at sea for strong counter-response and warning purposes against the identified frontline artillery units." The spokesperson also asserted, "The enemy side must immediately cease provocative military actions near the frontline." The North Korean military had also conducted about 130 rounds of live-fire artillery shooting at sea the previous day as a warning response to the South Korea-U.S. military exercises.
