The First Black Leader in U.S. House History... Who Is Jeffries? (Comprehensive)
New Leadership Trio of Black, White, and Latin American Members Emphasizes 'Diversity'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Hakim Jeffries has been elected as the new House Majority Leader to lead the U.S. Democratic Party in the House of Representatives. This marks the first time in the history of the U.S. Congress, including both the Senate and the House, that a Black leader has been appointed. Jeffries will succeed Nancy Pelosi, who has led the House Democrats for 20 years, and will lead the Democratic House starting January next year.
On the 30th (local time), The New York Times (NYT) and others reported that the U.S. Democrats unanimously elected Jeffries as the new House Majority Leader through a caucus held that morning.
Jeffries, a native of Brooklyn, New York, graduated from New York University Law School and entered politics in 2006. Representing New York's 8th district, he served as a New York State Assembly member before being first elected as a federal House representative in the 2012 election. He has been re-elected six consecutive times, including the recent midterm election held on the 8th. In 2020, he was one of the seven impeachment managers who participated in the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.
Jeffries praised the achievements of the current leadership and expressed his aspirations, stating, "More must be done to combat inflation, protect democracy, guarantee abortion rights, welcome new Americans, respect equal protection under the law, and improve public safety."
Following Nancy Pelosi’s announcement to step down after the midterm elections on the 8th, Jeffries will assume the role of House Majority Leader starting January 3, when the 118th Congress convenes. Although Jeffries will be the leader of the majority party, the Republicans gained control of the House in the recent midterm elections, meaning he will face the challenge of leading in a minority position.
Alongside Jeffries, Katherine Clark (Massachusetts) and Pete Aguilar (California) were elected to the Democratic House leadership as Majority Whip and Assistant Democratic Leader, respectively. The NYT noted that this new leadership team symbolizes the "diversity of the Democratic Party," featuring the first Black Majority Leader, a white woman (Clark), and a Latino man (Aguilar).
Clark will become the second-ranking Democrat in the House, replacing Steny Hoyer (Maryland), while Aguilar will take the third-ranking position, succeeding James Clyburn (South Carolina).
Jeffries stated, "House Democrats are united by a promise to fight for minorities, including young people, the elderly, immigrants, the poor and sick, the suffering, the lost, and the left behind."
At 52 years old, Jeffries is thirty years younger than Pelosi, who is 82, marking a generational shift in the Democratic House leadership. Both Hoyer and Clyburn are also in their 40s and 50s. After the new leadership was elected, Pelosi said, "A new era is dawning," and expressed confidence that "the new leadership will competently lead our House."

The next Speaker of the House is expected to be Kevin McCarthy, the current House Republican Majority Leader. In the Senate, the Democrats hold 50 of the 100 seats, and with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as the President of the Senate and casting tie-breaking votes, the Democrats have effectively secured the majority regardless of the runoff election for the Georgia federal Senate seat scheduled for the 6th of next month.
