Marine Science Students Also Bring Data to Life... KIOST Holds Launch Ceremony for 'Coastal Big Data Platform'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Doo-yeol] The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) will announce the launch of the ‘Coastal Big Data Platform’ service on the 1st and hold a commemorative ceremony for the ‘Coastal Big Data Platform Launch Day’ at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX).
In June, KIOST was selected as the lead organization for the construction and operation of the coastal sector platform under the ‘2022 Coastal Big Data Platform and Center Construction Project,’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency (NIA).
The NIA’s ‘Big Data Platform and Center Construction Project’ plays a role in creating a foundation where public and private sectors collaborate to produce and build high-quality, highly usable data, and collect, analyze, and distribute it through platforms.
Since 2019, big data platforms have been established in a total of 16 fields including environment, transportation, and distribution. This year, five additional fields including coastal and spatial convergence were selected, with the project scheduled to continue until 2024.
The ‘Coastal Big Data Platform’ launched by KIOST is the first among the newly selected fields to complete construction and will begin service on the platform site starting from the 1st.
About 300 attendees, including representatives from related ministries and platform operating organizations, will participate in the ceremony to share updates on the coastal big data platform and data construction status, analysis results of demand surveys for coastal big data targeting industry and academia, and plans to activate the big data platform based on business models.
Additionally, promotional and consulting booths from 10 institutions including the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, National Institute of Fisheries Science, and Inha University, which oversee each center, will be operated to jointly conduct customized data production and sales, new service discovery, and technical support, seeking new opportunities for collaboration.
The ‘Coastal Big Data Platform’ was planned with the purpose of gathering various information for disaster and emergency preparedness and response in coastal areas. A total of 24 institutions including KIOST participate in the project, which consists of one big data platform and 10 centers.

The coastal flooding simulation service ‘City in Crisis’ and the crowdsourcing service ‘Sea Care Day,’ which connects institutions, organizations, and individuals aiming to protect the marine environment, are also planned to be unveiled.
KIOST announced that it will link and utilize the project with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ planned ‘Coastal Disaster Response System Construction’ project to ensure safe coastal use amid rapidly changing coastal environments due to climate change.
Dr. Kim Sung-dae, head of the KIOST Marine Big Data Center and the person responsible for the project, said, “The Coastal Big Data Platform is another medium to establish a cooperative network among government, public institutions, industry, and academia. It will serve as an opportunity platform for discovering new data utilization businesses, innovative services, and supporting startup companies based on data.”
KIOST President Kim Woong-seo said, “The Coastal Big Data Platform Launch Day ceremony is a milestone for KIOST to lead the datafication of marine science. We will focus our capabilities to innovate the marine data ecosystem and enhance the institution’s competitiveness by leveraging the coastal big data platform.”
