[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] The Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement held a groundbreaking ceremony for the ‘5G-based Advanced Manufacturing Robot Demonstration Support Center’ on the 29th inside the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement in Buk-gu, Daegu.

Advanced manufacturing robots refer to manufacturing robots that integrate next-generation technologies such as autonomous driving, IoT, and AI, enabling collaborative work with humans.

About 150 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Yang Geum-hee (Daegu Buk-gu), a member of the People Power Party, Lee Jong-hwa, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Daegu, Kim Ho-cheol, Manager at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and officials related to the robot industry.

The Demonstration Support Center will be constructed with a project cost of 9.7 billion KRW, covering a total floor area of 3,780㎡, with 4 floors above ground (main building) and 1 floor above ground (annex). Completion is targeted for February 2024.

Along with the construction of the Demonstration Support Center, the Robot Industry Advancement Institute will invest 20 billion KRW by 2024 to equip 13 types of equipment, including performance and reliability evaluation devices related to advanced manufacturing robots and a 5G-based advanced manufacturing environment demonstration testbed.

The Demonstration Support Center is expected to establish itself as a core infrastructure for the development of the domestic robot industry by building a world-class robot-based smart factory line incorporating 5G-based digital twin technology, enabling support from advanced manufacturing robot product development, demonstration, to commercialization.

An official from the Robot Industry Advancement Institute said, “5G-based advanced manufacturing robots currently operate robots wired or over short distances, but with 5G, it is possible to remotely control robots at high speed over long distances. The Demonstration Support Center is the place where such robots can be tested, examined, and evaluated.”

Son Woong-hee, President of the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement, said, “The 5G-based advanced manufacturing robot industry is a next-generation industry that continues to grow in the manufacturing robot market, so it is important to support companies and foster the industry through proactive infrastructure establishment. Once the Demonstration Support Center is completed, the development of the robot industry and the global expansion of domestic companies will be accelerated.”

The Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement has been conducting the ‘5G-based Advanced Manufacturing Robot Demonstration Infrastructure Construction Project’ since 2020, supporting the early market entry of advanced manufacturing robots and the establishment of software safety systems to foster the 5G-based advanced manufacturing robot industry, and further supporting domestic robot companies’ competitiveness enhancement and global market entry.
