Students from Daegu University’s Yeollim Volunteer Group were awarded the Youth Volunteer Award and a prize of 5 million KRW at the ‘16th Catholic Social Welfare Awards’ ceremony held on the 23rd at the main auditorium of the Catholic Daegu Archdiocese Education Center.
The Catholic Social Welfare Award, presented by the Catholic Daegu Archdiocese, is an award established to recognize individuals who transcend religion, ideology, race, and social environment to work alongside the poor and marginalized neighbors and dedicate themselves to the promotion of human welfare.
The award is divided into three categories: Catholic Social Welfare Award, Social Service Award, and Youth Volunteer Award. Nominated upon recommendation by Daegu Seo-gu Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, Daegu University’s Yeollim Volunteer Group was honored as the first recipient of the Youth Volunteer Award since its establishment in 2020.
The Yeollim Volunteer Group is a joint student club of the Department of Elementary Special Education and the Department of Early Childhood Special Education at Daegu University. Founded in 1996 under the name ‘Yeollim,’ the group was formed by students from the special education class of 1994 who operated after-school programs for children with developmental disabilities at Daegu Seo-gu Comprehensive Social Welfare Center.
Over the past 27 years, the volunteer activities have been passed down from seniors to juniors, with approximately 290 students having participated as members of the Yeollim Volunteer Group, supporting around 270 children with disabilities.
Utilizing their special education majors, Yeollim Volunteer Group students are matched one-on-one with children with developmental disabilities to operate the ‘Saessak Classroom,’ an integrated support program for children with disabilities, focusing on the development of cognition, social relationships, language expression, and communication skills.
