The biological father, who was not at home when the daughter died, later transferred the body into a kimchi container and kept it on the rooftop of a villa until recently.
On the 23rd, the Pocheon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that they have booked and are investigating the biological mother, Ms. A (34), on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act and concealing a corpse. The biological father, Mr. B (29), who is now divorced from Ms. A, is also facing charges of corpse concealment.
The police are investigating on the grounds that Ms. A neglected her 15-month-old daughter, Ms. C, at their home in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, in early January 2020, leading to the child’s death. It is reported that Ms. A habitually neglected and abandoned the child by leaving her alone for long periods, citing reasons such as visiting her husband.
After the daughter died, Ms. A neither reported the incident to the authorities nor took the child to a hospital. Instead, she left the body on the veranda inside the house, later moving it into a suitcase and temporarily storing it at her parents’ home. Mr. B, who was serving a prison sentence at the time of the daughter’s death, was released a few months later and moved the body to the rooftop of Ms. A’s in-laws’ villa.
The body, placed inside a kimchi container, was hidden on a canopy installed on the rooftop and remained undiscovered by other family members or outsiders until now. The crime, which they thought would be completely concealed, was eventually exposed by administrative authorities when Ms. C would have turned four years old if she had been alive. The crime was uncovered after Pocheon City found it suspicious that Ms. C had not undergone infant health checkups or been registered at a daycare center, leading to a missing person report filed with the police on the 27th of last month, three years after the incident.
Pocheon City made several attempts to contact Ms. A to ascertain Ms. C’s whereabouts, but when Ms. A did not respond properly, they filed the report. The couple claimed that their youngest son was with them and that the daughter was not missing, which aroused suspicion and led the police to escalate the case to a criminal investigation, initiating a full-scale inquiry.
Initially, Ms. A denied the daughter’s death, claiming she had abandoned the child on the street. However, under pressure from police profilers and digital forensic analysis, she eventually confessed. Based on her confession, the police recovered the body and requested an autopsy, but due to severe decomposition, the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

During the police investigation, Ms. A claimed, “I saw the child was dead in the morning,” and regarding the concealment of the body, she stated, “I did it because I thought I would be suspected of causing the child’s death.” The police are intensively questioning them to clarify the exact circumstances and motives behind the crime.
