Naver Certificate Now Usable on Major OS and Browsers Worldwide
Amazon, Google Followed as World's Third Entity with Own SSL
Integrated into Major Global OS and Browsers
Only Domestic SSL/TLS Certification Authority
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Naver Cloud has become the third in the world, following Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), to possess its own 'SSL'.
On the 21st, Naver Cloud announced that its top-level Certification Authority certificate (RootCA, hereafter Root CA) has been installed for the first time in Korea on major global operating systems (OS) and browsers worldwide.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer)/TLS (Transport Layer Security) is an encryption-based network communication protocol. Encrypted communication between web browsers and servers using trusted ‘SSL/TLS (Root) certificates’ supports the transmission of data in a safer internet environment. When a lock icon and https appear before the site address in the web browser’s address bar, it means SSL/TLS is being used.
Since establishing the RootCA, the top-level certification authority for issuing root certificates, for the first time in Korea in 2017, Naver Cloud completed the installation on major global OS and browsers over five years, including Apple in October this year. As a result, it has been installed on ▲Microsoft OS ▲Mozilla’s Firefox browser ▲Google’s Android OS and Chrome browser ▲Naver’s Whale browser ▲Apple’s iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS, covering major global OS and browsers.
For subscriber certificates to function properly, the top-level certification authority certificate must be installed within major OS and browsers, and there are differences in credibility and universality depending on the registered OS and browsers. Additionally, the domestic SSL/TLS certificate market has been entirely dependent on foreign products. With Naver Cloud’s RootCA being the first in Korea to be installed on all major global OS and browsers, it has secured certificate sovereignty.
Naver Cloud has continuously made various efforts to secure certificate sovereignty. Notably, it renews WebTrust certification annually and complies with global web public key infrastructure (PKI) standards. It also meets the standards of the browser technical standards consortium ‘CA/Browser Forum’ and participates as a member company.
Next year, Naver Cloud plans to launch a cloud-exclusive Domain Validation (DV) certificate that customers can use for free. Free certificates will be provided only for services configured on the Naver Cloud Platform (NCP). Customers can easily and conveniently issue SSL/TLS certificates to establish an encrypted communication environment.
Furthermore, Naver Cloud will unify the SSL certificate issuance channels for cloud customers and internal domains of group companies to enhance the interoperability and quality of Naver Cloud Platform services. Through automatic renewal and distribution of its own certificates, it aims to reduce potential service disruptions caused by using external certificates and provide more efficient and stable cloud services.
