Prime Minister Sunak's Surprise Visit to Kyiv... "Support for Ukraine's Air Defense System"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made an unannounced visit to Ukraine for the first time since taking office last month and promised support for air defense systems.
According to the AP News on the 19th (local time), Prime Minister Sunak made a surprise visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and after holding talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky, he said at a press conference, "We will support Ukraine until Ukraine wins," adding, "I came here to say that the UK will continue to stand with you until you achieve the peace and security you need and rightfully deserve."
The UK Prime Minister's Office reported that Sunak announced new air defense system support worth 50 million pounds (about 8 billion KRW), including anti-aircraft guns, radar, and anti-drone equipment, to Ukraine on the same day. This is Sunak's first visit to Kyiv since taking office at the end of last month. Previously, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also made a surprise visit to Ukraine.
Standing side by side with Prime Minister Sunak, President Zelensky expressed gratitude, saying the visit was "meaningful and useful for both Ukraine and the UK." President Zelensky stated that he discussed with Prime Minister Sunak the protection of energy security in Europe and Ukraine, Ukraine's airspace defense capabilities, and overall defense cooperation measures.
President Zelensky tweeted that Ukraine and the UK are "the strongest allies," and said, "Because friends like you are by our side, we are confident of victory."
