Andukgeun, Chief Negotiator for Trade, Proposes Measures to Enhance Cooperation within APEC Region
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Lee Do-hoon, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ahn Deok-geun, Director General of Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, attended the 33rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Foreign and Trade Ministers' Meeting (AMM) held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 17th, emphasizing the Korean government's contributions to sustainable leadership in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 18th, the APEC AMM meeting was composed of three sessions: ▲ balanced, inclusive, and sustainable growth ▲ regional reconnection ▲ open and sustainable trade and investment. Vice Minister Lee attended the 1st and 2nd sessions, while Director General Ahn participated in the 3rd session.
In the 1st session, Vice Minister Lee presented the Korean government's contributions to sustainable and inclusive growth in the Asia-Pacific region and the future direction of cooperation with APEC. In the 2nd session, he evaluated APEC's efforts to strengthen connectivity during the COVID-19 period and requested APEC's cooperation for stable vaccine supply in preparation for similar future crises.
Director General Ahn emphasized the role of trade and investment in economic recovery and response to complex crises, prioritizing ▲ restoration of the multilateral trading system ▲ response to digital transformation ▲ strengthening the role of trade and investment in addressing climate change.
Director General Ahn stated that efforts will be made to fully reflect the role of trade and investment in Korea's Indo-Pacific strategy, which is being prepared for the common prosperity and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region. After the conclusion of the AMM, a joint ministerial statement, one of the APEC outcome documents, is usually adopted, but this year, consensus on the wording related to Russia is insufficient, and discussions on the wording are still ongoing.
