Genesis G90 Selected as MotorTrend Car of the Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Genesis has been recognized by Motor Trend magazine again this year, following last year.
Genesis announced on the 18th that its G90 was selected as the '2023 Car of the Year' by Motor Trend, a globally prestigious automotive magazine.
The G90 demonstrated top competitiveness in six evaluation categories?safety, efficiency, value, design, engineering, and driving performance?among more than 20 candidate vehicles including the BMW i4, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and Honda Civic Type R.
The Motor Trend Car of the Year awards ceremony took place at the '2022 LA Auto Show,' which opened on the 17th (local time). Motor Trend cited the G90’s exterior design, advanced new technologies, and a wide range of luxurious convenience features as reasons for its selection.
Edward Loh, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend, said, "Genesis’s flagship G90 offers meticulous attention to detail in every aspect that passengers see, touch, and experience, from quilted leather and wood materials throughout the interior to technological elements that maximize ease of use. Genesis has overturned conventional wisdom about luxury sedans by combining high completeness with price competitiveness that other companies cannot match."
Christian Seabaugh, an editor, said, “Unlike its competitors, the G90 is a model that is elegant and possesses timeless value. I think the G90 is an astonishingly mature model.”
The judges also evaluated that the G90 welcomes passengers with generous features and intuitive usability. They particularly highlighted the rear seat space equipped with easy-close door buttons for smooth closing, as well as reclining and massage functions as strengths.
Motor Trend’s Car of the Year is recognized for its high objectivity and credibility because it involves extensive real-vehicle testing and thorough analysis by top experts over a long period.
Genesis was the first Korean car brand to have the G70 selected as the 2019 Car of the Year by Motor Trend. The GV70 also received acclaim by being named the 2022 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) of the Year, continuing the positive reception.
This year, the Ioniq 5 became the first EV to be selected as the ‘SUV of the Year,’ making it a year in which Hyundai Motor Group won all the top awards chosen by Motor Trend.
Claudia Marquez, Genesis North America Chief Operating Officer (COO), said, “It is an honor that the G90 was selected as the 2023 Motor Trend Car of the Year. This award recognizes our sincere commitment to providing products with design and driving performance that meet customer expectations.”
The G90’s award is significant in that it sets a new standard for premium sedans by having Genesis, a Korean luxury car brand, recognized for its product excellence in the global luxury car market dominated by European and American brands.
