Na Heeseung, President of Korea Railroad Corporation, to Chair the International Union of Railways Asia-Pacific Region
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Na Hee-seung, CEO of Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), has been elected as the Chair of the Asia-Pacific region of the International Union of Railways (UIC).
According to Korea Railroad on the 18th, Na was unanimously elected as the next Chair in a vote by Asia-Pacific member countries held recently at the UIC headquarters in Paris, France. The voting result will be finally approved at the UIC General Assembly on the 8th of next month, where all members worldwide including Europe, the Middle East, and North America will participate.
The UIC regional Chair presides over the biannual regional general meetings, proposes strategies and directions for railway development in the Asia-Pacific region, and leads various projects for international railway cooperation. The Chair also attends the overall Chairpersons' meetings to discuss major issues of the union and represents the interests of regional members. The term of the regional Chair is two years, and Na will officially begin his duties from next year.
Na said, “By serving as Chair, I will represent the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen cooperation and solidarity among members, activate technical and personnel exchanges with all UIC member countries, and elevate the international status of Korea Railroad to a higher level.”

Meanwhile, UIC is the world's largest international railway organization established in 1922 for the purpose of setting international standards for railway technology and sharing information among member countries.
Its headquarters is located in Paris, France, and 194 railway organizations from regions including Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, North America, South America, and Africa are members. South Korea participates through KORAIL, the National Railroad Corporation, and the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
