Mapo-gu, 4.35 Tons (87%) of 5 Tons of Waste Can Be Reduced
[Seoul District News] Mapo-gu Strengthens Opposition to Pilot Waste Preprocessing Incineration Plant on the 17th
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, and the resident observation group are conducting a pilot test of household waste pre-treatment at the Mapo-gu garbage truck depot on the 17th.
View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) has pointed out the unfairness of Seoul City's selection of Mapo-gu as the site for the resource recovery facility and is calling for a complete cancellation. Meanwhile, it has embarked on a "household waste pretreatment facility demonstration" to present an efficient alternative for waste disposal.
A household waste pretreatment facility refers to a resource circulation facility that separates recyclable metals, plastics, and waste vinyl from waste before incineration. Through the pretreatment facility, the amount of incinerated waste can be significantly reduced, making it a new alternative to building incineration plants.
On November 17, the district moved and installed pretreatment facility equipment at the Mapo-gu cleaning vehicle depot (3 Gayang-daero) and conducted a household waste pretreatment demonstration in the presence of an observation group composed of local residents and professional organizations. This demonstration aimed to verify how much incineration-targeted waste is reduced through the pretreatment facility, using a sample of 5 tons of household waste corresponding to 53% from apartments, 32% from general houses, and 15% from commercial establishments within Mapo-gu.
The demonstration results showed that out of the total 5 tons of household waste, 4.35 tons were reduced. This proved an effect of reducing about 87% of the total waste through the pretreatment process.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "Today’s demonstration proved that proper separation and the use of pretreatment facilities can significantly reduce incineration-targeted waste. This firmly supports the previous stance that building additional incineration plants is not the only solution." He added, "If pretreatment facilities are installed in all autonomous districts, the waste problem can be solved without constructing additional incineration plants."
On October 11, Mapo-gu showed through a "household waste characteristic analysis" event that 64.3% of waste can be separated and recycled. Recently, a waste reduction campaign targeting apartment residents confirmed that about 56.6% of household waste can be reduced through separation promotion and resident participation alone.
