Professors Lee Sang-yeol and Gong Jae-min of Gyeongsang National University Selected for 'Top 100 National R&D Achievements'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The research achievements of Professor Emeritus Lee Sang-yeol of the Department of Life Sciences and Professor Gong Jae-min of the Department of Physics at Gyeongsang National University have been selected as one of the ‘Top 100 National R&D Achievements of 2022’.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the final selection of the Top 100 Achievements on the 8th. The Top 100 Achievements is a government-wide system that selects outstanding national R&D achievements to enhance public understanding and interest in the role of science and technology driving national development and to boost the pride of scientists and engineers.
Professor Lee achieved results titled ‘Improvement of Plant Cell Viability and Development of Molecular Agriculture Crops through System Synthesis-Based Redox Regulation’ (2021?2022 Bio Green Linked Agricultural Life Innovation Technology Development Project), specifically ‘Elucidation of the Cold Stress Sensor Mechanism of Thioredoxin Protein and Development of Cold-Resistant Crop Varieties Using This Sensor’.
In this research, Professor Lee was the first to identify the mechanism of plant cold resistance mediated by sensor proteins that detect changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration generated by low-temperature stress.
He also secured core technology for developing climate change-adaptive crops by regulating the expression of low-temperature sensor proteins.
Professor Lee’s research achievements are expected to contribute to solving animal feed and food supply issues by developing crops adapted to growth-limiting regions using temperature-sensing proteins.
Professor Gong achieved research results titled ‘Development of High-Performance, High-Durability Perovskite Solar Cells’ through ‘Development of Organic Semiconductor Doping Method Using Carbon Dioxide and Its Application’ (Mid-career Research, 2021?2024).
