View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] As the Democratic Party of Korea attacked President Yoon Suk-yeol following the end of the national mourning period for the 'Itaewon crowd crush disaster,' the People Power Party launched an all-out counterattack.
On the 6th, Chief Spokesperson Park Jeong-ha stated in a commentary, "President Yoon has sincerely apologized repeatedly regarding the Itaewon accident," and criticized, "The Democratic Party, accustomed to theatrics, seems unable to feel the president’s genuine apology."
He added, "The People Power Party will ensure that the accident, which shocked the Republic of Korea, is not exploited politically while falling victim to rumors and conspiracies."
Chief Spokesperson Yang Geum-hee also sharpened her remarks in a statement, calling the claim that police deployment due to the Yongsan Presidential Office relocation was one of the causes of the disaster "the Democratic Party’s false political offensive" and "politicization of a disaster."
Yoon Sang-hyun, a candidate for party leadership, directly targeted former National Intelligence Service Director Park Ji-won, who called for President Yoon to 'apologize profusely,' on Facebook, saying, "How long will you continue to seize power through agitation and hide incompetence?"
He also said, "Please reprimand the Democratic Party juniors who are trying to use the disaster as an opportunity for agitation. They led the agitation over the Sewol ferry disaster and are now calling for Yoon Suk-yeol’s resignation. Please stop them."
Regarding the 'Itaewon disaster,' the Democratic Party was criticized for raising suspicions that it was behind the gatherings for mourning that turned into protests demanding President Yoon’s resignation.
Floor Spokesperson Jang Dong-hyuk pointed out in a commentary about the rally led by the Candlelight Victory Transition Action (hereafter Candlelight Action) near Seoul City Hall Plaza the previous day, "They shouted for the government’s resignation and did not hesitate to curse the president," adding, "It is shameful and tragic to believe such things happened in front of the joint memorial altar for the victims of the Itaewon accident."
