Trilateral US-ROK-Japan Senior Envoys on North Korea Nuclear Issue Condemn North Korean Missile Launch
Kim Gun, Head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Negotiation Headquarters, Holds Trilateral Phone Talks with US and Japan's Senior Representatives on North Korea Nuclear Issue
Violation of Security Council Resolutions Poses Serious Threat to Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Community
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The chief representatives for North Korea's nuclear issue from South Korea, the United States, and Japan held a telephone consultation on the 3rd regarding North Korea's long-range and short-range ballistic missile launches and strongly condemned them.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kim Gun, Director General of the Ministry's Office for Peace and Diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula, held a trilateral phone consultation on the morning of the same day with Sung Kim, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, and Takehiro Funakoshi, Director of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pointing out that North Korea's repeated provocations only lead to strengthened cooperation between South Korea and the U.S., as well as among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.
The three chief representatives criticized North Korea for clearly violating multiple United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions with the launches on that day, causing a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, the region, and the international community as a whole.
They noted that despite the international community's stern warnings, North Korea has continuously advanced its nuclear and missile capabilities according to its own plans, carrying out missile provocations at an unprecedented frequency.
They agreed that the responsibility for the current escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula lies solely with North Korea, and that North Korea's attempts to obscure or shift this responsibility will never succeed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
The three representatives decided to thoroughly prepare for any possible additional provocations by North Korea and to continuously strengthen close communication and cooperation bilaterally and trilaterally for a firm and unified international response, including future measures at the United Nations Security Council level.
