[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The honor of winning the grand prize at the 4th Youth Checkerthon Competition went to the Jisangyeol team from Ewha Girls' High School. 'Checkerthon' is a combination of fact-check and marathon.
The Youth Checkerthon Competition is the only youth fact-checking competition in Korea where elementary, middle, high school, and university students verify the authenticity of news, information, and content on specific topics through fact-checking and compete with the results.
According to the Korea Press Foundation, this year's Checkerthon was held from May with preliminaries and finals under the theme "Save the Earth from False and Manipulated Information!" The Jisangyeol team, which won the grand prize, selected the topic "[Zoom Out] Truth or Falsehood: Side Effects of Renewable Energy!" and fact-checked passages related to the environment from the CSAT mock exam, focusing on the side effects of renewable energy. They are scheduled to receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and a prize of 2 million won.
In addition, a total prize of 13 million won will be awarded to 14 teams that won the Excellence Award, Merit Award, Encouragement Award, and Roni Award.

The awards ceremony will be held on the 4th at 2 p.m. at the International Conference Hall on the 20th floor of the Korea Press Center. A congratulatory event will also be held. Yoon Jiro, an environmental journalist from Segye Ilbo, will give a lecture on environmental journalism, and a fact-checking Golden Bell quiz corner will be conducted. It will be broadcast live on the Korea Press Foundation's YouTube channel and is open to everyone.
