[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jung-gu (District Mayor Kim Gil-sung) will install Seoul's first monorail to facilitate residents' mobility.
Construction will begin this November along the stairs leading up to Daehyeonsan Water Reservoir Park in Donghwa-dong, aiming for completion and opening in July 2023.
Daehyeonsan Water Reservoir Park is located between Sindang-dong in Jung-gu and Geumho-dong in Seongdong-gu, spanning 75,570㎡ over the reservoir, featuring exercise facilities and green spaces.
The park attracts many citizens with various sports facilities including a lawn plaza, multipurpose stadium, jogging track, badminton court, tennis court, and gateball field.
The problem was that visitors had to climb a steep staircase about 110 meters long to reach the park. It was a daunting path for the elderly and people with disabilities. Slipping accidents frequently occurred on the stairs during rain or snow, leading local residents to repeatedly request improvements to the access route since 2010.
This monorail installation fulfills the long-standing wish of the residents.
The monorail has 15 seats and runs back and forth along the 110-meter track following the stairs to Daehyeonsan Water Reservoir Park. The existing stairs will remain available for use in parallel. Three stations will be installed. The travel time from the starting point to the final destination is about 3 to 4 minutes. It is free of charge and open to everyone.
Once completed, it is expected that residents who have difficulty walking, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities, will be able to safely and conveniently access the park.
District Mayor Kim Gil-sung said, "If the monorail, a new transportation means, becomes a regional landmark, it is expected to contribute to revitalizing the commercial district," adding, "Jung-gu will continue to implement projects to improve the walking environment."
"Development of the Jangandong area, which is becoming more underdeveloped compared to Cheongnyangni-dong and Imun-dong, is necessary. We will organize residents' requests such as attracting desired facilities, resolving traffic congestion and environmental issues, and work with the city to resolve them smoothly. We will also clarify any misinformation with factual explanations."
This was stated by Lee Pil-hyung, Dongdaemun District Mayor, on the 2nd during a briefing meeting on the district unit plan for the area around 283-1 Jangandong (former Dongbu Cargo Terminal site).
The meeting was attended by Lee Pil-hyung, Dongdaemun District Mayor, the deputy mayor, and relevant department heads, who reviewed residents' demands and complaints under the overarching theme of "a pleasant and safe Dongdaemun-gu" and sought solutions before project implementation.
Key discussions focused on securing safe school routes, addressing environmental pollution and increased traffic caused by cargo transport vehicles, attracting shopping centers, and reducing the scale of logistics facilities, which are major concerns of residents.
First, to secure safe school routes, medium and large cargo vehicles will be separated from general vehicle routes and moved underground to minimize their paths. Operating hours will be adjusted through traffic environment impact assessments to avoid overlapping with children's main activity times.
Additionally, measures such as deploying dust collection vehicles and water washing vehicles at all times are being considered to make the facility a leading resident-friendly site rather than a nuisance facility.
The district plans to convey residents' opinions and improvement points to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the project owner, to ensure that the residential complex development in Jangandong forms a new landmark beneficial to residents and proceeds smoothly.
