Korea University Medical Center to Promote Construction of 'Future Hospitals' in Gwacheon and Namyangju, Gyeonggi
Goal to Realize a "Future Hospital Like No Other" in 2028, the 100th Anniversary of Korea University College of Medicine
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] Korea University Medical Center has officially begun efforts to build a "future hospital unlike any other in the world" in Gwacheon and Namyangju cities, Gyeonggi Province.
On the 2nd, Korea University Medical Center announced that based on its internal strategies and plans for the future hospital, which aims to be a cutting-edge smart healthcare hub, it will start formal consultations with local governments. The medical center explained that the "future hospital" has received continuous love calls from multiple local governments hoping to attract large medical institutions to their regions.
Following Anam, Guro, and Ansan hospitals, the future hospital will be the fourth hospital of Korea University Medical Center. Its goal is to be a "smart hospital unlike any other in the world" and a "win-win medical institution that cooperates organically with the local community." Therefore, from the early stages, it plans to form a joint consultative body with local governments to thoroughly discuss urban development plans, infrastructure, related regulations, and ripple effects. Considering that policy support and pace regarding site conditions, scale, and linked facilities vary depending on each local government's circumstances, the medical center will initiate simultaneous consultations with local governments and promote the formation of a consortium and detailed project execution plans to quickly derive a concrete model.
The medical center stated that both Gwacheon and Namyangju cities, currently under consideration, have excellent locations and environments, and that the process involves the medical center and local governments creatively developing detailed plans. Gwacheon, due to its location covering the southern Gyeonggi area and Seoul's Gangnam district, can specialize by concentrating Korea University Medical Center's core treatment, research, and education functions. Namyangju is expected to have strengths in creating a differentiated "medical complex" due to high local medical demand and conditions for developing surrounding infrastructure.
Furthermore, the medical center plans to work together with local governments, which hold the key to urban development and surrounding infrastructure construction, from the "ground zero" stage to implement a smart hospital incorporating new medical technologies and open innovation to overcome severe intractable diseases, thereby creating a win-win medical institution that contributes to the local community and healthcare system.
Kim Byung-jo, Director of Medical Planning and Professor of Neurology at Anam Hospital, who is leading the future hospital project team, said, "Korea University Medical Center's future hospital will focus on being a cutting-edge smart healthcare hub where advanced personalized medical services, state-of-the-art biomedical research, and innovative medical talent development take place, as well as playing a pivotal role in revitalizing regional healthcare." He added, "We will do our best to become a hospital that breathes and grows together with the region through close and organic consultations with local governments."
