Conservative Rally Amid Security Crisis and Political Purge
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] A public opinion poll revealed that President Yoon Seok-yeol's approval rating has surpassed the mid-30% range for the first time in four months. In party support, the People Power Party rose by 2.3 percentage points, while the Democratic Party of Korea fell by 2 percentage points. This is interpreted as a conservative consolidation effect amid ongoing security crises and political investigations.
According to a poll released on the 31st by Realmeter (commissioned by Media Tribune, conducted from the 24th to 28th among 2,521 adults aged 18 and over nationwide), positive evaluations of President Yoon's administration rose 2.8% from the previous week to 35.7%. This is the first time in 16 weeks that President Yoon's approval rating has exceeded 35%, last recorded at 37.0% in the first week of July. Negative evaluations of President Yoon dropped by 2.7 percentage points from the previous week to 61.7%.
By region, President Yoon's approval rating increased by 6.7 percentage points in Seoul and by 6.0 percentage points in Daegu-Gyeongbuk, a conservative stronghold. By age group, the approval rating among those in their 40s, who tend to lean progressive, rose by 3.4 percentage points, drawing attention. In party support, the People Power Party recorded 37.6%, up 2.3 percentage points from the previous week. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Korea dropped 2 percentage points to 46.4%. The Justice Party slightly declined to 3.5% from 3.6% the previous week.
Senior Expert Bae Cheol-ho of Realmeter analyzed, "Core supporters have consolidated around security and investigation issues, and the moderate group has joined in, indicating a passing of the low point." Regarding the Democratic Party, he evaluated, "Rep. Kim Eui-gyeom's allegation of the 'Cheongdam-dong drinking party' failed to damage the opposing camp and only caused controversy within their own camp, likening it to a 'friendly fire incident.'"
