Gochang-gun Receives Minister of Environment Award in Ministry of Environment's 'Green City' Program

[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] On the 28th, Jeonbuk Gochang-gun announced that it received the Minister of Environment Award at the 10th Green City (Outstanding Environmental Management Local Government) Awards Ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Environment, held on the 27th at Suwon Convention Center in Suwon City.

The 'Green City' initiative, conducted biennially since 2004, is a project implemented by the Ministry of Environment to award local governments with excellent environmental management and to promote environmentally friendly local administration.

This year, 12 local governments were selected through a document evaluation, and four, including Gochang-gun in Jeollabuk-do, received the Minister of Environment Award.

After a comprehensive evaluation by experts on assessment items such as urban environment, natural environment, climate change response, leadership, and resident participation, six outstanding local governments were announced as awardees, with Gochang-gun being the only one selected from the county level.

The county received favorable evaluations for its title as the ‘Ecological Hub Gochang’ and for developing Gochang, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve area, into an ecological tourism city.

Local governments selected as ‘Green City’ receive a plaque and trophy, and are classified as ‘priority consideration targets’ in future environmental evaluation projects by the Ministry of Environment, thus receiving support.

County Governor Shim Deokseop stated, “We will systematically link climate change response strategies, citizen environmental education, and active management of environmental pollution factors to create a citizen-centered eco-friendly green city.”
