[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Coast Guard Station (Chief Kim Jin-young) announced on the afternoon of the 27th that it conducted the '2022 Coastal Oil Spill Joint Exercise,' simulating an oil tanker spill accident around Hwasun Port, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City.
The exercise involved more than 110 participants from 10 organizations and related groups, including Seogwipo Coast Guard, Jeju Regional Coast Guard, Jeju Coast Guard Station, Navy, Seogwipo City Hall, Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, and Marine Volunteer Oil Spill Response Team, as part of proactive administration.
Additionally, local organizations and groups capable of participating in oil spill response operations in the Hwasun area in the event of an actual marine pollution incident took part, aiming to enhance oil spill response capabilities.
The exercise began with activities by the Coastal Pollution Investigation and Evaluation Team, composed of related agencies and private experts, followed by safety training for participants, distribution of response supplies, area-specific response measures, and waste disposal in sequence.
Response equipment and materials such as high-pressure and low-pressure washers, oil fences, and oil absorbents were deployed during the exercise, which focused on participant education and hands-on experience, including ▲ cleaning rock and stone embankments using high- and low-pressure washers ▲ digging sand beach grooves with heavy equipment ▲ wiping contaminants with oil absorbents ▲ collecting tar and waste using beach cleaners.
A Seogwipo Coast Guard official stated, "Through this joint exercise, we will share the Coast Guard's response techniques and strengthen an organic cooperation system to ensure thorough preparedness and response to large-scale marine pollution accidents."
