Zelensky: "Russia Preparing to Attack Ukraine's Kahovka Dam"... Will It Become a Second Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant?
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Seoyul] A warning has been raised that the Russian military may blow up the hydroelectric dam in southern Ukraine following the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
According to foreign media on the 21st (local time), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in a national address the day before that the Russian military had planted mines on the Kakhovka Dam in Nova Kakhovka, Kherson Province in the south and was preparing a "false flag attack." A "false flag attack" refers to an attack where the perpetrator hides their identity and blames a hostile country.
The Kakhovka Dam is a multipurpose dam with hydroelectric facilities and is a key infrastructure supplying water to southern Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula through the North Crimean Canal and the Dnipro-Kryvyi Rih Canal. President Zelensky expressed concern that if this dam is blown up, a disaster of enormous scale would occur.
However, Russia claims that Ukraine is preparing an attack on this site. Sergey Surovikin, the commander-in-chief of the joint Russian forces in the Ukrainian region, stated on the 18th that "there is evidence that the Ukrainian military is preparing a missile attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Kherson."
The next day, Vladimir Saldo, head of the Russian administration in the Kherson occupied area, issued an evacuation order for residents and warned that if the Ukrainian military attacks the hydroelectric dam, there is a risk of flooding.
