The British Standards Institution (BSI), a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), officially established the international standard "ISO 19650" in 2018 in response to the increasing use of BIM technology in the construction sector and the demand for standardized criteria.
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is an information model that maximizes productivity and safety throughout all construction stages by creating three-dimensional models of facilities in virtual space to establish process plans and identify design and construction issues in advance.
The BIM international standard certifies BIM information management and operational capabilities, collaboration skills, etc., based on guidelines, processes, personnel interviews, and project performance, and the standard established by BSI is the only one of its kind.
By acquiring BIM ISO international certification, companies can have their technological capabilities recognized in overseas markets that use or require ISO standards, making it easier to apply technology or manage projects when participating in business. In fact, countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia are increasingly revising their national guidelines based on BIM ISO standards.
POSCO Engineering & Construction is already applying BIM in various projects. It applied BIM design to the entire line for the first time domestically in the Sinansan Line double-track railway project and is applying BIM-based smart technology from design to construction and operation management at the Warsaw incineration power plant in Poland. Additionally, starting with the development project of the Korean-American town in Songdo, Incheon, it plans to expand the BIM-based metaverse collaboration system.
This year, POSCO Engineering & Construction established a dedicated BIM organization to specialize in project technical support, improve BIM work guidelines and processes, and plans to apply BIM to the operation management field to provide customers with operation management systems.
