Hyundai Rotem Holds Delivery Ceremony for K2 Tanks Exported to Poland... "Enhancing the Status of 'K-Defense'"
Korea-Poland Government and Military Officials Attend... "Stable Supply"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The first K2 tank for export to Poland has been shipped.
Hyundai Rotem announced on the 19th that it held the "K2 Tank Poland Gap Filler Shipping Ceremony" at its Changwon plant in Gyeongnam to commemorate the first shipment of K2 tanks exported to Poland. The term Gap Filler means filling the gap between the withdrawal of old tanks and the introduction of next-generation new tanks in the military. Recently, Poland announced plans to introduce next-generation tanks and decided to first receive 180 Korean-made K2 tanks as a gap filler.
The event was attended by Piotr Ostaszewski, Ambassador of Poland to Korea; Slawomir Swiatek, Military Attach? to Korea; Col Aleksander Martyszunis, incoming Military Attach? to Korea; Maciej Jabolnski, Army Chief of Staff; and other officials from the Polish Embassy and military in Korea. From the Korean side, Won Jongdae, Director of Defense Power Policy at the Ministry of National Defense; Eom Donghwan, Administrator of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration; Eom Yongjin, Commander of the Army Logistics Command; Heo Geonyeong, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Quality; and Lee Yongbae, President of Hyundai Rotem, along with government, military officials, and related company representatives, attended in large numbers.
The initial shipment includes 10 K2 tanks. The remaining tanks will be delivered sequentially to Poland by 2025. Upon arrival, the K2 tanks will undergo acceptance inspections and other procedures before being deployed to units for active service. Earlier, Hyundai Rotem signed a basic contract for the urgent supply of K2 tanks and export of Poland-type K2 tanks with the Polish Military Procurement Office in July. In August, an export execution contract was signed for the first batch of 180 K2 tanks, marking the first-ever export of a Korean-made tank.
The company explained that the Korean government's defense sales diplomacy played a significant role in the K2 tank's entry into Poland. In June, President Yoon Suk-yeol held a summit with Poland at the NATO summit and had in-depth discussions on defense cooperation. In May, Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop held talks with Poland's Defense Minister Błaszczak, who visited Korea, announcing strengthened defense and defense industry cooperation. At that time, the Polish side showed interest in Korean-made weapons by visiting domestic defense companies, including Hyundai Rotem's Changwon plant. Last month, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration held a kickoff meeting for the "Integrated Export Support Group," involving the Ministry of National Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, each military branch, Defense Science Research Institute, National Institute of Technology and Quality, and system companies. This group was established to provide comprehensive support for continuous performance improvement and smooth export of the K2 tanks.
Hyundai Rotem plans to focus more on expanding its overseas defense market following the shipping ceremony. Starting with the Saudi International Defense Exhibition earlier this year, the company attracted steady interest from overseas defense officials by showcasing the K2 tank at the world's largest ground weapons exhibition, France's Eurosatory, the Poland International Defense Exhibition, and the Defense Expo Korea (DX Korea). Last month, Hyundai Rotem signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for future weapons system business cooperation with Poland's state-owned defense group PGZ (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A.) and a Teaming Agreement for defense cooperation with Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS, focusing on next-generation tank development to prepare for future battlefields.
A Hyundai Rotem official said, "We will do our best to ensure the stable delivery of K2 tanks to Poland," adding, "We will continue to maintain technical cooperation with overseas defense companies to further enhance the global status of 'K-Defense Industry.'"

Hyundai Rotem is the only tank manufacturer in Korea and has been mass-producing the K2 tank, the main ground weapon of the Korean military. Since being designated as a first-class defense contractor for tank production in 1976, it developed the Korean-type K1 tank for the first time in 1984. In the 1990s, it successively introduced upgraded models of the K1 tank, including the K1A1, K1E1, and K1A2. Subsequently, as a result of the Korean next-generation tank introduction project that began in 1995, the development of the K2 tank was completed in 2008, and mass production began in earnest in 2014.
