Ministry of SMEs and Startups Opens Nominations for 2023 Small Business Merit Awards
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 19th that it will accept applications for the ‘2023 Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Merit Awards,’ which recognize individuals who have contributed to the development and promotion of SMEs, from the 20th until November 25th.
The SME Merit Awards is the largest-scale award program in Korea, targeting 7.28 million SME entrepreneurs and related parties, with a total of 93 awards. The awards are presented annually at the ‘SME Entrepreneurs Convention,’ held during SME Week (the third week of May). Since its first event as the opening ceremony of the ‘2nd SME Week’ in 1990, the SME Entrepreneurs Convention has recognized and rewarded those who have contributed to the growth and development of SMEs to boost morale.
The award categories include Model SME Entrepreneurs, Model Workers, Contributors to SME Development, and Outstanding Supporting Organizations. Through a selection process, approximately 380 awards will be given, including orders of merit, Presidential and Prime Minister’s commendations, and Minister of SMEs and Startups commendations.
This year’s awards aim to enhance representativeness by expanding the application reception channels from the Korea Federation of SMEs to local Small and Medium Venture Business Administrations nationwide, and by receiving recommendations from major SME organizations.
To strengthen innovation, the evaluation criteria for ‘Model SME Entrepreneurs’ will increase the weight of technology development and facility investment, actively identifying innovative contributors.

Applicants wishing to be considered should prepare the required documents, including the official commendation report, and submit them in person, by mail, or by email to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (local Small and Medium Venture Business Administrations), the Korea Federation of SMEs, or major SME organizations.
