Jeju Island Confirmed as Asia's First International Safe City with 4th Certification
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has become the first in Asia to receive the 4th international Safe City certification.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief Park Geun-oh) announced on the 18th that Jeju recently received the final approval for international Safe City certification after a rigorous evaluation by the International Safe Community Certifying Centre (ISCCC).
A total of 435 cities in 33 countries worldwide have been certified as international Safe Cities, and 28 cities in Korea, including Jeju, have been recognized as international Safe Cities.
Since Jeju was first certified as an international Safe City in 2007, it achieved the 2nd certification in 2012, the 3rd certification as the first in Asia in 2017, and this year, after dedicated efforts for the 4th certification, it has achieved a meaningful result.
The International Safe Community Certifying Centre noted the remarkable decrease in accident-related deaths since Jeju’s certification as an international Safe City, and highly evaluated the value of the only injury surveillance system in Korea and the reliability of its data.
Additionally, the certification was confirmed in recognition of the continuous efforts by 45 safety-related organizations in the province cooperating to analyze local accident causes and improve safety risk factors, including the operation of 120 accident prevention programs.
Governor Oh Young-hoon stated, “The safety projects in Jeju are achieving results thanks to the active efforts and participation of each resident,” and added, “We will advance one step further as a leading international Safe City and build a meticulous safety network suitable for the new era.”
The international Safe City certification signifies that Jeju is internationally recognized as a city with the foundation and capability to continuously improve safety levels, and its status as a leading safety city is expected to be further elevated.
The Fire Safety Headquarters plans to hold a ceremony to proclaim the 4th international Safe City certification at the Jeju Citizen Welfare Town on the 11th of next month, following the confirmation of the certification approval.
