The Green Building Competition awards ceremony was held on the 13th at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the ‘Korea Green Building Competition’ was conducted through a public contest from June 30 to August 10 to discover excellent completion cases and innovative ideas for green buildings. This year, a new ‘operation category’ was established for buildings that have held green building certification for more than five years, emphasizing the importance of maintenance and management of green buildings.
As Korea’s first energy self-sufficient public building, Seoul Energy Dream Center was honored with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in recognition of its achievements in efficiently operating the building since its opening in December 2012. Through passive building technology, the center reduced the energy required by the building by more than 70%, producing renewable energy and selling the surplus energy to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). Last year, it achieved an energy self-sufficiency rate of 153%, operating beyond energy self-sufficiency as a practical Energy Plus building.
Seoul Energy Dream Center operates energy and climate change education, experience programs, and exhibitions for a diverse range of citizens from children to experts, with approximately 590,000 visitors since its opening. The exhibition hall within the center introduces new and renewable energy sources such as geothermal, solar, and bioenergy, as well as zero-energy technologies.
Seoul Energy Dream Center has also established itself as a representative energy self-sufficient building in Korea by widely sharing its operational experience with domestic and international public and private institutions. Since its completion in 2012, it has built basic data on building energy, continuously monitoring production and consumption status, and has steadily improved building energy performance through major equipment performance diagnostics.
