Hyundai Rotem to Lead K1 Tank Performance Upgrade
Enhancement of K1 Tank Combat Efficiency, Survivability, and Stability
[The Asia Business Daily Military Correspondent Yang Nakgyu] Hyundai Rotem announced on October 13 that it had signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the K1 tank performance upgrade project (K1E1).
The K1E1 project aims to sequentially upgrade the performance of the aging K1 tanks to adapt to the evolving future battlefield environment. The process includes depot maintenance, which involves disassembling, repairing, and restoring K1 tanks that have been operated by the Army for a certain period, as well as a performance upgrade by installing the latest components.
The goal of the performance upgrade project is to enhance the combat efficiency, survivability, and stability of the K1 tank on the battlefield. The K1E1 tank will be equipped with features that support real-time operational response, such as a digital battlefield management system, navigation devices, and identification friend or foe (IFF) systems. Additionally, front and rear surveillance cameras and a driver’s thermal periscope have been added to enable more efficient tank operation. The tank reaches a maximum speed of 60 km/h, has an engine output of 1,200 horsepower, and accommodates a crew of four.
A Hyundai Rotem official stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure the stable delivery of the K1E1 tank,” adding, “We will continue systematic research and development to further contribute to strengthening South Korea’s national defense capabilities.”
Hyundai Rotem previously developed the K1 tank, the first Korean main battle tank, in 1984. The company later upgraded the K1’s 105mm main gun to a 120mm main gun and applied improved special armor to produce the K1A1 tank, thereby enhancing its firepower.
