[Asia Economy Reporter Tae-won Choi] An unknown player ranked 2704th in the world claimed the top spot at the 6th LIV Golf Invitational Series tournament, sponsored by Saudi Arabian capital, with a total prize money of $25 million, receiving a prize close to 7 billion KRW.
Eugenio Lopez Chacarra (22, Spain) shot a 3-under-par 69 with 5 birdies and 2 bogeys on the final day, the 3rd round, of the 6th LIV Golf Invitational Series held on the 9th at Stonehill Golf Course (par 72) near Pathum Thani, Bangkok, Thailand.
With a three-day total of 19-under-par 197, Lopez Chacarra received $4 million for the individual victory and 25% of the $3 million team victory prize, amounting to $750,000.
Born in 2000, Lopez Chacarra, who majored in sports management at Oklahoma State University and was ranked 2nd in the amateur world rankings, turned professional this year and entered the LIV Series.
Unlike most promising amateurs who turned professional and advanced to the existing two major tours such as the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour), he made a contrasting choice.
His difficult decision ultimately led to a windfall of $4.75 million (approximately 6.7 billion KRW).
Patrick Reed (USA), who has won 9 times on the PGA Tour, finished as runner-up, 3 strokes behind, while Paul Casey (England) and Korean-American player Kim Si-hwan (USA) tied for 3rd place, 1 stroke behind Reed.
