The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 5th that South Korea was elected as a Council member at the '41st ICAO Assembly' held in Montreal, Canada. With this, South Korea will serve its eighth term over three years.
ICAO, established in 1947 as a specialized UN agency, was joined by South Korea in 1952. ICAO determines policies and international standards related to all areas of international civil aviation, including aircraft manufacturing, transportation, and air traffic control, and provides guidelines for their implementation. In particular, the ICAO Council is composed of representatives from 36 member states elected at the triennial Assembly and serves as ICAO's main decision-making body.
In the Council member (Part 3) election held on the 4th (local time), South Korea received 151 votes out of 175 participating countries, successfully securing re-election. Prior to the election, the government dispatched a public-private delegation composed of government agencies such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as aviation-related organizations including airport corporations and airlines, led by Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong, to Montreal to conduct support negotiations. On the evening of the day before the election, the 3rd, a 'Korea Night' reception was held exclusively, attended by delegations from various countries.
Since first being elected as a Council member in 2001, South Korea has fulfilled its responsibilities by providing free aviation training to developing countries worldwide, dispatching Korean experts to the ICAO Secretariat, and developing and distributing safety management software.
