Sang-geun Lee, Goseong County Governor, Supports 'Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Administrative Integration'... Need for Balanced Development
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] Lee Sang-geun, the governor of Goseong County, Gyeongnam, expressed his welcome by actively supporting Park Wan-su, governor of Gyeongsangnam-do's proposal for the ‘Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) administrative integration’.
On the 30th, following the proposal for Bu-Ul-Gyeong administrative integration by Gyeongnam Province, Governor Lee stated, “The outflow of population to the metropolitan area due to job losses and the decline of local industries are causes that accelerate regional extinction, which is a crisis not only for Goseong but also for western Gyeongnam,” and expressed support for “administrative integration encompassing the entire Bu-Ul-Gyeong area.”
He also expressed sympathy for the fundamental purpose of promoting the Bu-Ul-Gyeong special union to achieve national balanced development and overcome the metropolitan area’s unipolar system, but acknowledged that concerns about the marginalization of western Gyeongnam were indeed present.
He criticized the special union, which is biased toward the southeastern region by maintaining three city and provincial offices instead of one city, and only jointly handling some metropolitan tasks, pointing out that despite dispatching an annual budget of 16 billion KRW and 150 personnel, it only handles joint tasks, making responsibilities unclear and causing conflicts due to vested interests, potentially turning it into a ‘roof on a roof’ (redundant organization).
