[2022 Asia Construction Awards] A Special Hand of K Construction Only
GS Construction, SH Corporation, POSCO Construction Receive 'Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award'
'Turning Crisis into Opportunity' Amid Global Economic Downturn
K-Construction Expected to Be a Strong Pillar for the Korean Economy
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] At the 17th Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards held this year, the honor of the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award went to GS Construction, Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation), and POSCO Construction. Hyundai Construction and Hyundai Engineering received the Seoul Mayor's Award, while SK Ecoplant and Lotte Construction were each awarded the Overseas Construction Association President's Award. Eight construction companies including DL E&C, Kumho Construction, Doosan Construction, Daewoo Construction, Booyoung Housing, Ssangyong Construction, Hanyang, and Hanwha Construction were selected for the Asia Economy Awards in various categories.
Asia Economy held the 2022 17th Asia Construction Comprehensive Awards ceremony on the 29th at the Korea Press Center, selecting and announcing the honored winners who shone in the construction industry this year. Last year, due to COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, a separate awards ceremony could not be held, but this year, a meaningful event was arranged to gather in one place to celebrate the achievements of the awarded construction companies.
The construction industry, which has a significant effect on economic growth and job creation, has long played a leading role in driving the Korean economy. Even when the country was devastated by the Korean War, it led the Miracle on the Han River, and demonstrated the strength of K-Construction in the Middle Eastern deserts with scorching heat over 50 degrees Celsius and sandstorms.
This year, despite the difficult environment caused by global interest rate hikes, economic recession, and soaring raw material prices leading to a contraction in the domestic housing and construction market, it is expected, as always, to turn crises into opportunities and become a strong pillar supporting the Korean economy.
This year's comprehensive awards mainly selected construction companies that achieved remarkable results in smart housing, apartment construction, and new technology and new construction methods, reflecting the trends of the times.
GS Construction, which received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the smart housing category, was highly evaluated for being a step ahead in integrating technology and lifestyle by launching the apartment brand ‘Xi’ and introducing the industry's first home network system.
SH Corporation received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the apartment construction category by designing the Godeok Gangil 13 complex, a national rental and long-term lease apartment, as a diverse street-centered village connecting various communities inside and outside the complex with the city.
POSCO Construction, awarded the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the new technology and new construction methods category, actively promoted housing projects applying modular construction methods, which are recognized as eco-friendly future construction technologies. POSCO Construction demonstrated high technical skills by completing the tallest 12-story modular building in Korea.
Hyundai Construction, which received the Seoul Mayor's Award in the win-win cooperation category, is pursuing a win-win growth strategy centered on 'support for mutual growth' and 'compliance with fair trade' with the goal of growing together with partner companies. To this end, it has established and operates the H-TOGETHER program, a sustainable mutual growth system covering five areas: win-win cooperation, safety, quality, transparency, and new technology.
Hyundai Engineering, awarded the Seoul Mayor's Award in the social contribution category, has taken the lead in solving local community problems and creating social value. Notably, since 2017, it has been conducting donation activities with the vocational rehabilitation facility for the disabled, ‘Goodwill Store,’ and actively providing housing support, self-sufficiency support, emotional support, goods sponsorship, and volunteer activities for residents of small room villages.
The Overseas Construction Association President's Award was given to construction companies in two categories: overseas civil engineering and overseas construction. SK Ecoplant, which won the overseas civil engineering category, is expanding its global market entry beyond Korea through infrastructure public-private partnership (PPP) projects. It proved its technical skills by successfully winning the 'UK Silvertown Tunnel Project,' the first infrastructure PPP project in Western Europe by a Korean construction company.
Lotte Construction, awarded in the overseas construction category, is successfully advancing large-scale projects overseas. The 'Thu Thiem Eco Smart City Project' is representative. It is a large-scale complex development project on a 50,000㎡ site in the Thu Thiem district of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, consisting of commercial facilities such as a shopping mall with five underground floors and 60 floors above ground, along with offices, hotels, serviced residences, and apartments.
DL E&C (customer satisfaction), Kumho Construction (customer satisfaction), Doosan Construction (brand), Daewoo Construction (brand), Booyoung Housing (customer satisfaction), Ssangyong Construction (remodeling), Hanyang (brand), and Hanwha Construction (brand) received Asia Economy Representative Awards in their respective categories.
