Controversy Over KLPGA Tour Broadcast Rights Negotiations, Ultimately Heading to National Audit...
Kang Chun-ja, CEO of KLPGT, Selected as Witness for October Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Audit
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Tae-won] The controversy over the broadcasting rights negotiations for the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour will ultimately be investigated at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's National Assembly audit.
On the 27th, the office of Lee Yong-ho, a member of the People Power Party, announced, "Regarding the recent controversy and suspicions arising from the selection process of the broadcasting rights operator for the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Tour (KLPGT), Kang Chun-ja, CEO of KLPGT, will be summoned as a witness at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's National Assembly audit in October." They added, "We plan to focus on examining and pointing out the suspicions and problems in the KLPGT broadcasting rights bidding process, as well as decisions that go against the interests of association members and players."
The witness examination of CEO Kang Chun-ja will center on "KLPGT broadcasting rights contracts and closed operations." Last month, KLPGT conducted a bidding process to select a broadcasting rights operator for five years from 2023 to 2027, selecting SBS Medianet as the preferred negotiation candidate. SBS Medianet scored 93 points, significantly surpassing JTBC Discovery's 83.6 points.
However, issues were raised that the selection process was not fair during the bidding. Furthermore, KLPGT included a clause in the bidding announcement requiring participating companies to pledge that if they raise legal objections such as civil or criminal lawsuits related to the selection evaluation and results, they must pay KLPGT a penalty of 2 billion KRW. This clause was deleted after controversy erupted.
