Gochang-gun to Host 'World Heritage Media Art' on the 1st of Next Month
[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeollabuk-do, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and Gochang-gun in Jeonbuk announced on the 26th that they will hold the ‘2022 World Heritage Media Art’ event for about a month starting from the 1st of next month at the dolmen site area.
The theme of the event is ‘When the sun sets, our wishes gather and miracles happen - Miracle of Twilight,’ turning the entire Dolmen Museum and the heritage site into a gigantic light screen.
In front of the Gochang Dolmen Museum stands the ‘Gyesan-ri Dolmen (90 tons),’ which firmly guards the area. It expresses the miracle of turning back time and features a meeting with the guardian deity of light. The path crossing the dolmen bridge to the heritage site sparkles with Milky Way and firefly lights.
Finally, the hill where hundreds of dolmens are spread out is encountered. The prehistoric people who carried hundreds of tons of stones and prayed for the tribe’s glory and the grace of the heavens have their wishes revived through cutting-edge digital technology.
Using projection mapping, lasers, and sound effects, the floor and forest are maximally utilized to create a mysterious and enchanting atmosphere.
On the first floor of the Dolmen Museum, various programs including a special media art exhibition (Light of Miracle, Lighting Hope) are organized to offer diverse enjoyment.
An experiential content called ‘Live Sketch - Dolmen Fantasia,’ where visitors can participate, is also operated.
Children can color whales, deer, tigers, and rabbits on paper with colored pencils, and when scanned, the animals appear in the dolmen animation on the wall.
By touching the characters in the animation, visitors can return to the center of the dolmen site and feel as if they are playing with the animals in a 3D experiential program.
The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on the 1st of next month. Along with the autumn night opening performance and media art, celebratory performances will follow, raising the excitement. Nearby, a promotional video hall and photo zone are prepared.
During the media art period, participants in the 2022 Gochang Dolmen World Heritage Media Art survey and on-site registration events will receive coffee coupons and other souvenirs.
Half of the world’s dolmens are distributed in Korea, and their types are diverse.
There are about 60,000 dolmens worldwide, of which about 30,000 are on the Korean Peninsula. In Korea, more than 2,600 dolmens are distributed in Jeollabuk-do. Among them, more than 63%, about 1,680 dolmens, decorate the mountain ridges of Gochang.
County Governor Shim Deokseop said, “This is a great opportunity to promote the megalithic culture of the Korean Peninsula in the Bronze Age and widely publicize its outstanding universal value by experiencing various contents of the Gochang Dolmen site.” He added, “I hope many people visit the dolmen site on autumn nights and create happy memories through the fantastic media art.”
Meanwhile, the ‘49th Gochang Moyangseong Festival,’ a representative historical and cultural festival of Gochang-gun, will be held from the 30th of this month to the 4th of next month around Gochang Eupseong (Moyangseong). It is recommended to visit Gochang Eupseong during the day and the Gochang Dolmen site at night to fully enjoy the deepening autumn.
