Korean 3 Major Telecoms Sweep Top Ranks in 5G Quality Metrics
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] SK Telecom's 5G download speed has been found to be the fastest among global mobile network operators. Korea's three major telecom companies also achieved excellent results in availability, coverage, and gaming experience.
According to the '5G Global Mobile Network Experience 2022' report by the UK market research firm Opensignal on the 23rd, SK Telecom recorded an average download speed of 469.6 Mbps, ranking first among global telecom operators. This speed is approximately 2.55 times faster than the global telecom average (184.2 Mbps).
Following that, LG Uplus ranked second with an average download speed of 429.6 Mbps. Bulgaria's Vivacom (422.2 Mbps) and Sweden's Tele2 (391.1 Mbps) took third and fourth places respectively, while KT (381.9 Mbps) followed in fifth place.
In upload speeds, domestic telecom companies showed weaker performance. Sweden's Telia (50.9 Mbps) was the fastest. SK Telecom (40.6 Mbps) ranked seventh, and LG Uplus (36.8 Mbps) was sixteenth.
In the availability category, which indicates the percentage of time 5G subscribers can actually access the service, the US's T-Mobile ranked highest at 40.4%. Among domestic telecom companies, KT ranked sixth with 33.1%, SK Telecom seventh with 32.5%, and LG Uplus tenth with 28.2%.
For the coverage metric, the 5G reach score, US's T-Mobile received 7.8 out of 10 points. SK Telecom followed with 6.9 points, tying for second place with Taiwan's FET. LG Uplus (6.7 points) tied for fourth place with Hong Kong's CMHK, and KT (6.6 points) ranked sixth.

Korea's three telecom companies also performed well in the 5G gaming experience. SK Telecom ranked first with 90.9 points out of 100, KT was second with 90.5 points, and LG Uplus was third with 89.4 points. In the 5G video experience, Sweden's Tele2 (84.1 points) and Telia (83.5 points) ranked first and second respectively, with Slovenia's Telemach (82.8 points) in third place.
