President Yoon Holds Korea-Germany Summit with Chancellor Scholz: "Close Cooperation for Relationship Development"
Discussion on Bilateral Relations Development Plans, Economic Security Issues, and the Korean Peninsula and Major International Affairs
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 21st (local time), President Yoon Suk-yeol held the first Korea-Germany summit with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in New York, USA.
During the meeting held in the Ban Ki-moon Hall at the Korean Mission to the United Nations in the afternoon, President Yoon told Chancellor Scholz, "Starting with today's meeting, I would like to work closely with you to further develop the bilateral relationship."
President Yoon mentioned, "Korea and Germany are countries that share the common experience of economic development under division, and have developed a friendly cooperative relationship from the same standpoint."
He added, "Germany is a key ally of our Republic of Korea that shares universal values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law," emphasizing, "In terms of trade and investment, Korea and Germany have achieved exemplary accomplishments within the EU (European Union)."
President Yoon proposed, "Since Chancellor Helmut Kohl visited Seoul in 1993, no German chancellor has visited Korea. It would be greatly appreciated if you could visit Korea at a convenient time next year, which marks the meaningful 140th anniversary of Korea-Germany exchanges."
In response, Chancellor Scholz said, "I am glad to meet you so soon after we both took office. Congratulations on your election," and added, "Although it will be difficult to have a long conversation during the UN General Assembly, I hope this meeting will be the start of more bilateral talks, including invitations for you to visit Germany as well as Korea."
The two leaders discussed ▲ ways to develop bilateral relations ▲ economic security issues ▲ the Korean Peninsula and major international affairs, according to a written briefing by Lee Jae-myung, Deputy Spokesperson of the Presidential Office.
The two leaders conveyed that Korea and Germany have developed a friendly cooperative relationship in various fields as key allies, and that they agreed to make efforts to deepen and develop bilateral relations through various exchanges at all levels, including at the summit level, in celebration of the 140th anniversary of Korea-Germany exchanges.
In particular, they agreed that there is great potential for cooperation between the two countries on economic security issues such as recent global supply chain disruptions. They also agreed to further strengthen communication and cooperation in related fields. The Indo-Pacific strategy and changes in the international situation due to the Ukraine crisis were also on the agenda. Deputy Spokesperson Lee introduced that President Yoon and Chancellor Scholz agreed to continue cooperation between the two countries for the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
