Gyeonggi-do Fire Department Urges Caution for Vehicle Fires in October
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] "Be cautious of vehicle fires in October"
The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters has issued a warning to be careful of vehicle fires and safe driving ahead of October, the peak travel season.
According to the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 20th, an average of 648 fires occurred in October over the past 10 years. This is 18.4% less compared to the monthly average of 794 fires. However, during this period, vehicle fires numbered 103, exceeding the monthly average of 102. In particular, electric vehicle fires have been increasing annually, from 1 case in 2019 to 3 in 2020, 6 in 2021, and 6 from January to August this year.
Accordingly, the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters urged ▲ maintaining an appropriate amount of coolant and checking and replacing consumable oils such as engine oil and brake fluid ▲ inspecting electrical wiring, ignition devices, and tire wear inside the engine room ▲ driver rest and vehicle heat management during long trips ▲ equipping vehicles with fire extinguishers and learning how to use them.
Earlier, the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters issued seasonal fire safety advisories based on big data of fire occurrence types over the past 10 years, such as warnings about air conditioner fires during the heatwave in August and cooking-related fires ahead of the Chuseok holiday in September.

A representative of the provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters stated, "In October, as vehicle use increases during the travel season, the risk of vehicle fires and traffic accidents also rises, so thorough inspections and maintenance before driving, as well as rest during driving, are essential for fire prevention and safe driving. We will also actively respond to electric vehicle fires by purchasing fire suppression equipment dedicated to electric vehicles and conducting research on response technologies."
